Choosing a Photographer/Videographer

Updated: Nov 10, 2024

Hello Readers !

As a mother of two, I find myself writing to you past midnight as my little rascals have now switched off for the night! I wasn't sure about the order I would be writing in, therefore I have decided to go with whatever I am inspired to cover in that moment, haha! Let's dive into it!

It was a difficult task to find a photographer/videographer for my weddin, this is what I learned:

During my search, I realized that there are various editing styles like Vintage, HDR, Film grain style, etc. Hence, it is crucial to take into account their editing style when selecting a photographer/videographer!

Most professionals are specialists rather than generalists. Generally, you can expect higher quality work from a specialist who focuses on perfecting one or two areas. This is not to say that generalists are incapable of doing the job! just to add on, it is advisable to base your decision on the work you have seen rather than on the work you have not.

After securing your photographer/videographer, the next important task is to compile a list of specific photos you want captured. It is crucial to ensure that someone has this list readily available on the day of the event. This valuable advice was shared by a close friend while we were both organizing our weddings simultaneously. Regrettably I forgot to pass on my list to someone, resulting in missing out on several key photos, such as group shots of the bridal party, among others.

If you think you'll need an hour to get all your photos and videos taken during prep time, make sure to add an extra 45 minutes to be safe! A lot of things can go wrong, and having that buffer is crucial. For instance, my photographer and videographer were punctual, but they struggled to find parking, causing delays. Sometimes they have to redo shots multiple times, eating into the time. Other times, it could be the makeup artist or your bridal team etc causing hold-ups. therefore I highly recomment to add as much buffer time as you can afford!

Another advice I have is to make sure that your photographer especially is accompanying you to capture moments with the guests. It's important that they take the lead and not just rely on your instructions or checklist!

Looking back, the day was incredibly busy, and as a result, I didn't capture many of the pictures I had hoped for. Nevertheless, both my photographer and videographer did a great job under the circumstances, and the editing was truly impressive! They even assisted me with getting dressed and putting on my shoes. It's a story I'll definitely share one day!

Although my examples are wedding related, this also applies to all events.

Anyway I like to keep the read nice and short so I will stop here!

Until next time Readers! Vinasse
